Prepare for medical device sales applications without direct experience

Choose suitable roles, build honest evidence and distinguish a knowledge gap from a qualification you do not meet.

Start with roles whose current requirements reasonably match your background. “No direct device experience” can describe an experienced B2B seller, a clinician or a recent graduate; their evidence and gaps differ. There is no single application that serves all three equally well.

Read requirements literally

Separate required and preferred qualifications, and confirm ambiguities through the employer's process. Do not assume a requirement is optional because another company's role differs. Likewise, do not reject a possible match solely because a broad online description makes the field sound uniform.

Stryker publishes entry guidance and an associate pathway overview. Those are employer resources, not a guarantee of eligibility, training or placement for every applicant.

Show what you can already do

An early-career candidate can demonstrate learning, customer communication and follow-through through actual work or projects. A B2B seller can explain commercial responsibilities and results. A clinician can describe technical communication and coordination without inventing revenue ownership.

Use one concrete example for each relevant responsibility. If you cannot find an example, record a gap. The gap might call for research, experience or a different target role. It should not be filled with a claim that you are naturally good at everything the posting mentions.

Distinguish preparation from qualification

Reading product information can improve the questions you ask. It does not confer clinical expertise, credentials or facility access. A practice plan demonstrates reasoning; it does not establish that you can independently perform the job's tasks.

Your application should make that boundary clear. “I have researched the role and want to understand its training requirements” is more defensible than “I can work independently immediately” without support.

Build a small complete application file

Prepare a role brief, an evidence inventory, a tailored resume and a short transition answer. Save the version submitted. Practice explaining each claim under follow-up.

If applications do not progress, review role matching and evidence before simply increasing volume. A single rejection does not reveal its cause. Look for meaningful feedback and revise the part you can actually assess. The associate preparation path connects the free exercises in a useful order.
