Questions to resolve before accepting a medical sales role
Clarify responsibilities, training, territory, scheduling and compensation definitions before comparing offers.
Compare confirmed terms and actual responsibilities. An attractive title or target compensation figure can leave important conditions unresolved. Write down what matters to your decision before an offer creates pressure to overlook it.
Clarify the work and support
Ask what occupies a normal week, which responsibilities you own and where you seek help. Confirm the training sequence and how readiness for independent work is assessed. If progression is discussed, ask which criteria and organizational conditions affect it; a possible path is not a promised promotion.
Scheduling questions should be role-specific. Clarify travel, territory coverage and any other expectations stated in the posting or conversation. Do not assume “remote” means no field work or that every medical sales role has the same routine.
Put compensation terms in separate columns
Record base pay, target variable compensation, eligibility, measurement, payment timing and unresolved conditions separately. Ask the employer for its current written terms and explanations.
A fictional offer with a $70,000 base and $30,000 target variable component has a $100,000 target total if the relevant conditions are met. It is not a $100,000 guaranteed base salary. This arithmetic example does not interpret an actual compensation plan.
Avoid comparing one offer's target total with another offer's base alone. Leave unknowns blank until clarified rather than treating them as zero or guaranteed.
Use a decision table
| Topic | Question |
|---|---|
| Training | What is required before independent responsibilities? |
| Territory | Which geography and accounts are included, and what can change? |
| Support | Who handles technical, operational and escalation questions? |
| Performance | How do expectations differ during onboarding and afterward? |
| Expenses | What is reimbursed and through which process? |
| Progression | Which criteria and openings affect the next role? |
Mark each important condition confirmed, unresolved or incompatible. That can be clearer than assigning arbitrary scores to benefits you value differently.
Resolve uncertainty through the right source
Use the employer's formal process to clarify terms and obtain appropriate professional advice for legal or contractual questions. A recruiter's anecdote, another employee's experience or a preparation template does not replace the agreement you are considering.
Keep a record of the answers and source. If a material detail changes, revisit the decision rather than preserving a comparison built on outdated information.
